Help. I want to know the laws of debt collection so that I know my rights.
If a collector contacts you about a debt, you may want to talk to them at least once to see if you can resolve the matter – even if you don’t think you owe the debt, can’t repay it immediately, or think that the collector is contacting you by mistake.

What is a good website to find out about debt collection laws?

My sister has credit card debt and they got a judgment. She has a 401k she is concerned about them taking. She's in South Dakota and I'm having trouble finding solid info on the internet about the laws in that state. Can someone lead me to a good website
I have never heard of any state that would allow a judgement to take retirement money.

One of the nation's biggest debt collectors has agreed to pay $2.5 million to settle Federal Trade Commission allegations that the company tried to trick people into paying old debts -- part of a crackdown by regulators triggered by a growing number of consumer complaints.
Nationwide complaints about debt collectors -- ranging from being harassed by repeated calls and abusive language to threats of violence -- surged 29 percent last year to 180,928, according to the agency's preliminary figures.

Last month, Hattie McKinney sued a collection agency that she said had been calling her Powder Springs home for nearly a year over a $300-plus cellphone bill that she disputes.
“They kept calling me and calling me, about 20 times a day,” said McKinney. “It kept me a nervous wreck.”
