How to write a real interest rate equation.?
Jun 12, 2007 by Mosh | Posted in Homework Help
This is a question I have....
Write a equation that defines the real interest rate. Use the equation to explain why unexpectedly high inflation redistributes income from creditors to debtors.
Hope this helps and that you understand the equation better soon! ;-)

How do you do this annual interest rate math equation?
Nov 27, 2008 by Ernesto G | Posted in Mathematics
If 4000 is deposited into an account paying 3% interest compounded annual and at the same time 2000 is deposited into any account paying 5% interest compounded annual, how long until the two accounts have the same balance?
Thanks!
You can manipulate dennisjkane's equation to find the EXACT number of years until both accounts have the same balance. Hint: try to get it in the form a^n=b, where a and b are real numbers.

Have you ever wondered about standard banking practices that seem to make no sense? Well, consider these:
A bank will accept a car or house as collateral for a loan but not the furniture you just purchased using a bank-issued credit card. What does the bank know that you are not being told? Is it that the furniture is not worth nearly what you have just paid for it? If it were, wouldn't it serve as collateral?
Or this: a person goes to a bank and applies for a loan. S/he is asked to show that her/his debt to income ratio lies at or below one designated by the bank. Perhaps the debt cannot be more that 40 percent of income. Sometimes the bank claims that even lending at that ratio is risky, but is willing to grant the loan at an interest rate greater than what borrowers with better ratios can qualify for. The higher interest rate is supposed to compensate the bank for the risk.

Plaintiff Kreisler & Kreisler, LLC (Kreisler) filed suit against National City Bank and PNC Bank Corp. (collectively, PNC), alleging that PNC breached the terms of a promissory note that Kreisler executed in favor of PNC by using the 365/360 method to calculate interest owed on the note. The 365/360 method takes the stated annual interest rate in the note, divides it over a year of 360 days, and then multiplies the result by 365 to determine the total interest owed over the course of a year. The method generates equal daily and monthly interest charges that are not possible using a 365-day year, but also has the effect of increasing the effective interest rate for the 365-day year by 1/72.

But US interest rates are only part of the equation; the other side is the interest rates affecting the other countries you're dealing with. Specifically, the interest rate differential and expected changes create changes in investment decisions.
MARK COLVIN: The Treasurer, Wayne Swan, has been arguing against the need for an interest rate rise. He says if one off price spikes caused by the recent spate of floods and Cyclone Yasi are removed from the equation, inflation remains very low.
