What is the definition Equity?

I just start taking a freshman accounting class, and were talking about the accounting equation (assets=liabilities+equity). I know assets are the beneficial resources the a business owns, and liabilities are claims against the assets (such as debt),

Equity is the shareholders claim on assets, after liabilities. The portion of assets shareholders own, after liabilities.

equity would be how much something is worth compared to how much you owe on it for example if you had a $150,000 dollar home and only owed $50,000 you would have $100,000 in equity
