Students oppose tuition hike
18.05.12
Student government at Lane Community College is objecting to a proposed 2 percent to 7 percent tuition increase next school year, saying the added cost would add to their already burdensome debt load.
The students have the sympathies of Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., who said that he’s amazed at the students who approach him, everywhere he goes in Oregon, to say they’re up to their eyeballs in debt. And they are scared.
Half expect to be unemployed after graduation or else working low-wage jobs such as cashier or receptionist, a recent report suggests. And the majority of students have five- or six-figure student loan debts that are due for servicing upon graduation.
